The next few months will prove decisive in the battle to save
Neilston Line. For line usage is being carefully monitored by
transport officials. An increase in passengers could well swing
the balance in favour of the no-closure campaign. But a drop could
provide the extra ammunition needed to override public opinion.
This viewpoint was reinforced following a meeting between local
MP Allan Stewart and Councillor Malcolm Waugh, chairman of Strathclyde
Regions Transportation committee. Mr Stewart said: I
got the impression that a crucial factor is going to be the usage
of the line over the next few months. The monthly figures of the
numbers who used the lone are being closely watched.
It is very important, therefore, that people continue to
use the line and do not switch to other forms of transport because
they think the line is going to close.
Despite his fears that waning public support could sound the death
knell, Mr Stewart remained cautiously optimistic. He added: We
had a full discussion on the current position following the strong
representation from the communities affected. I think that Strathclyde
have been very impressed by the case put forward for the Neilston
line and the depth of feeling their proposal have aroused
in particular the excellent recent submission by Neilston Community
Council.
I emphasised, among other points, that the position of Neilston
is quite different from Kilmacolm. It is possible to provide an
acceptable alternative bus service from Kilmacolm to Glasgow.
The idea that Neilston people would travel by train is not sensible
the inconvenience of such an interlink would be great
Mr Stewart said Strathclyde regional Councils heavy emphasis
on Barrhead station was misplaced
