Barrhead-Scotland.com - Background:
Barrhead-Scotland.com is a community driven web site initiative that involves local schools, community groups and citizens alike. The web site celebrates Barrhead's strong industrial heritage throughout the ages, while also promoting a positive outlook for the future with economic and technological re-generation. The idea of a dedicated web site for Barrhead was first proposed by a local councillor, Edward Phillips. This in turn led to funding being secured from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and thus allowing the construction of a data base driven web site for the community. Other activities carried out in tandem with the development of the site, have included extensive outreach training for local community groups and citizens alike. The site was developed in close consultation with a Steering Group made up of local stake holders and Key Players. Each stage of the development was reported and discussed with this key group. The web site was officially
launched in October 2002 with the event marked by a successful
Video link up with the 'other' Barrhead
in Canada and key speeches made
by local politicians. A significant amount of the content is provided by the local community itself and goes a long way to encouraging active participation and a sense of ownership. Any one can get involved and the web site can be viewed at the following web address:
