Canavan Coal Company

On google the address for Canavan Coal is Lowndes Street, but this is a residental area; so I am assuming it is used purely for business registration purposes. Not aware of any coal merchants still existing in the area.

Can anyone help

Hi I used to live in Barrhead but live in Weymouth Dorset. I’m looking for family history information; I’m trying to find who the father was for a Margaret Kincaid born 14/12/1912 also sister Mary Kincaid born 02/11/1909. The mother’s name was Margaret Kincaid born 24/11/1883. They lived at 192 Cross Arthurlie Street Barrhead. Margaret the daughter sadly went into an institution in Dundee at the age of 14 and died at the age of 37. From records that I have found I believe the father was married with children at the time so there is no record of a father on the birth certificate any information or photos would be appreciated thank you Fiona McVey

ARDMORE HOUSE

Further to my last message, I am sure it is on Donnie's Brae. If you go to google maps, and input Ardmore Donnie's Brae Barrhead - it should be able to find the house for you. There are two other entries in the 1912 directory for Thomson relating to the waterproofing company. George Thomson, at Rockwood. (House at the start of Hillside Road, originally built by the Shanks family). And Thomas Thomson at Westlea. Westlea is clearly on the old maps next to the waterproofing company and close to Donnie's Brae. Kind Regards Murphyz

ARDMORE HOUSE

I know it doesn't help much but in the 1912 telephone directory it has the following:- "Thomson, W.N, of the waterproofing company, ltd. Ardmore - telephone 179." You could ask the land registry to do a search but this can be quite expensive. I have something at the back of my mind that I have seen a house of this name - at a guess Hillside Road/Gateside/Donnie's Brae area. If I come across anything on the old maps, I update this posting.

Barrhead News Archive

The Barrhead News did not commence until 1897 and none of the records are on line. Prior to that Barrhead would have been covered by the Renfrewshire papers - but Paisley would have dominated the news.

Arthurlie Churchyard

Thanks for your information MurphyZ.

I have posted on Rootschat and hopefully it will produce something.

I am uncertain about the ownership of the butcher's shop in Dovecothall. I have seen a photograph of another butcher's shop in the area and was hoping someone may have seen or possessed any others.

Are there any archives for the Barrhead News available on line as I am not in a position at present to check locally. Maybe they are kept in the Barrhead library. There may also be lists of businesses in the area from around 1850.

I'll check that out.

Happy searching,

Regards, Phil Donnelly

Arthurlie Churchyard

The only other suggestion I could make is to try posting a message on a site called rootschat.com. It is free and perhaps some one may know another source for the records of the graves removed. Re the butchers shop - was the shop still in the family possession on your great grandfather's death? If the death was between 1840-1860, there is a chance the shop may have been advertised in the Renfrewshire papers. After 1899 it might be in the Barrhead News records. I have found that after 1860s there is not much in the Renfrewshire papers regarding Barrhead as Paisley itself filled most of the pages. Depending on the dates it may be worth a visit to Paisley Central Library.

My Grandfather

Help!

I attempted to attach a photograph with this posting without success.  What am doing wrong?

The photograph I believe to be my Grandfather James Donnelly. He was a calico engraver and lived in Springhill with my Grandmother, Bridget.

Do any of my friends on this site have any other photographs of the village of Springhill area or of workers in the printfields. It is unlikely that anyone will remember my Grandfather but never say never.

My Great Grandfather was supposed to run a butchers shop in Dovecothall. His name was Henry Donnelly. I cannot find any information about this shop.

If someone can give me instructions I will attach photograph in the next post.

Any help gratefully received,

Regards, Phil Donnelly

Old Arthurlie burial ground

Can any members advise me if there is a database or written list available of persons who were originally buried in Arthurlie graveyard and reinterred in Neilston cemetery?

Arthurlie burial ground was situated next to Arthurlie Church, which was also known as the 'whitewash kirk' (thanks, MurphyZ). The location of both was at the leisure centre and car park and were demolished in 1967/68.

I am seeking sources other than the church, library or cemeteries department.

It's a long shot but any information is welcomed,

Thanks again folks,

Regards,

Phil Donnelly

Livingstone, Gorham, Allison

In response to Olive's post; I too relate to these families and would love to chat with you further. My relationship is through Margaret Allison's maternal ancestors. I am interested in finding more information on the family of John and Margaret [Allison] Gorham. Their daughter Margaret [Maggie] married William Livingstone. Maggie's brother James ended up in New York, USA; but where did the rest of the family settle? Aloha, Karen @ kspahia@hawaiiantel.net

Trees House

Barrhead Library has some old maps of Barrhead. I think there are a couple of houses with "Trees" included due to the original size of the Trees estate. The house you are referring to -  which would have been at the top and to the right of Treespark avenue - is clearly marked on the 1856 map as the United Free Manse. On the 1913 map it is marked as UF Manse, but on the 1939 map it is not identified as a manse, so I am not sure if it ceased to belong to the church sometime between 1913 and 1939. The original Trees estate dates back to before 1830. It is mentioned in Charles Taylor's Levern Delineated which was published in 1830. The house mentioned in the book, I think is now the Fereneze Golf Club House. Unfortunately the manse isn't specifically mentioned in the book. I am not a member of Barrhead and Neilston Historical Society, so they may have more information. I have some more information about the "Trees" mansion house. If you have access to Barrhead Library, the 1913 map would be the most useful as the majority of the roads and main landmarks which are still identifiable today are shown.

Barrhead News w/e 14 August 2009 - Glanderston

In this week's Barrhead News, there is a page headed Glanderston Estate, with a photo of an old mansion house. The mansion house in the photo is actually not Glanderston but is of Caldwell House. Glanderston is no longer there but would have been situated near the "Craigie". Caldwell House is now a ruin and is in Uplawmoor. The portal to the past website has a photo of Caldwell House under Resource ID 675. The photo of Glanderston is under ID 2058.

Looking for Knoxs in Barrhead

Hello

My parents are planning a trip to Scotland in the early fall and plan to visit Barrhead. Curiosity has gotten the best of my mother in regards to her family history and as result she would like to know if she has any living relatives in the Barrhead area.  If there are she would probably like to look them up while there.  My mother lived in Barrhead as a child and immigrated to Canada, I believe in the 50's.   My Grandfather's name was William Knox and he had three other brothers Henry, Robert (Bobby) and James.  If there are any living relatives still in the area please contact me via email cweller@cogeco.ca.

Thanks,

Craig

Re the Crossan family

There is a message on the general forum from a lady in the States looking for the graves of Crossan relatives in Neilston cemetery; I am no relation. The only gravestone I came across was a James Crossan died 5th May 1939, and his beloved wife Ann B. McAlpine died 26th June 1946. There is another name on the stone but as it is a more recent one, I did not wish to load the details. You may be able to help the lady, if you have a look at the post. There is also a query on Rootschat from some one trying to find a Patrick Crosson who is on the 1851 census. I realise this is several generations back, but you may know some of the names. Regards Murphyz

For the person enquiring about the Crossan Family

I'm not sure whether or not there could be a typo in the message re the husband and wife buried in neilston graveyard. My great uncle was Willie Crossan who was married to Annie and lived in Neilston. Willie is survived by one of his brothers, who is now 98. (Walker)

Stewart Family Information

There are a couple of death notices in the Barrhead News for members of the Stewart family that you are looking for. From Scotlands People I have found census information and marriage information for some of the relatives. Unfortunately James Turnbull Stewart does not seem to have been a confectioner, but everything else seems to tie in with the information you have.
