Making music is the business

East Renfrewshire Council has just launched a project that’s struck a chord,
as it’ll aim to encourage young local bands to be more business-like, and
make money while making music.
A group of 12 bands from across the area will be involved in the project
that’s called StreetSMART, and is being pushed forward by the
council’s arts and business development teams in partnership with Riverside
Studios in Busby. The project will involve rehearsals in professional
studios, production of demo CDs, skills workshops and seminars with a
range of guest speakers including business advisors, music union representatives
and executives from recording studios.
Councillor Alan Lafferty, community services convener, said: "StreetSMART
is a fantastic project that’ll give great opportunities to a group of
talented young people. It will give advice on how to get started, market
a band, and network with other bands. It will also give them a better
understanding of the music industry in general. I’m looking forward to
hearing the demo CD in July and seeing some local success stories."
It’s hoped that rehearsals will start at the beginning of March, then
skills workshops will take place during April, with recording and production
going on during May and the demo CD ready to launch in July. Duncan Cameron
who runs Riverside Studios said: "The Scottish music industry employs
more than 7,000 people and generates annual income to the economy in excess
of £380 million."
"By giving these young people access to specialist knowledge and practical
help to develop their talents, we hope that some will develop careers
in an industry that can be rewarding but can also be littered with potential
pitfalls."
