The
official launch of Barrhead-Scotland .com web site took place at the Barrhead
Community Library on the 4th of October 2002. It was inaugurated by a
special video link with our name sake counterparts in Barrhead, Alberta,
Canada.
The historic event featured key note speeches by Ken Macintosh, MSP,
Barrhead Councillor Edward Phillips, a letter of congratulations from
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Provost of East Renfrewshire,
Allan Steele carrying out a discussion with Mayor Brian Schulz in Barrhead,
Canada.
Provost Steele introduced pupils from St.Lukes high school and the first
Freeman of Barrhead, Walter McCready to the Canadian audience and hoped
that some of the residents of Barrhead would be able to visit their counterparts
across the ocean in the near future.
Councillor Edward Phillips speech described the aims and objectives of
the new community web site for Barrhead :
'Thank you Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation without which this launch
would not have been possible
Last but not least thanks to Alan
Rutherford who has made Barrhead-Scotland.com a skeleton ready for all
the community groups, businesses and members of the public to provide
the flesh and blood"
He added :
"Barrhead-Scotland.com the website of Barrhead, East Renfrewshire,
UK. It is for all schools, all the community groups and all the businesses
and people. It is for the Arthurlie Football Club fixtures, booking
a hair doo and the local pub dominoes team. It is for finding that long
lost friend somewhere in the world or leaving a message for your partner
saying you might be a bit late. It is now. It is your web site. Barrhead-Scotland.com
will bring our town to the world and the world to our town.
