I used tae go on a Thursday night tae the Bourock Church and there wis a man
ye called a Mr Watt. He stood on that platform and spoke about drink, Don't
Drink, sign the pledge. One a Friday night we went to the South Band of Hope,
then on Saturday night we went to the Arthurlie Band of Hope which was held
in the Glen Street Halls which was burnt down a number of years ago. Mr Kerr
stood on the platform and spoke about don't drink and he used tae tell us, Beer
is best left alone
My mother was one of the leaders on the Band of Hope. One night we were having
a speaker come tell us about all the evils of drink and he was late. My mum
was running in and out the church door looking for him. Eventually a taxi drew
up and our speaker fell out of it so drunk they couldn't even bring him into
the hall. When we came home that night, my mother was raving like a lunatic
about this man, seemingly he was very well known in the Band of Hope circle,
it was such a sin.
